What Is a Keyword and What Role Does It Play in Your Digital Marketing Strategy?

What is a keyword?  Keywords are words or phrases that people use to search for something online. One of the most important foundations of any search engine optimization (SEO) strategy is using keywords to their greatest potential.  SEO keywords are single words and phrases that consumers use during their online searches for goods and services.  In fact, the most effective keywords are those that someone might actually type in when performing an internet search.  Websites, seeking to be found, try to maximize their traffic by selecting popular keywords and putting them into their content.  Search engines connect  these two groups  by matching the keywords and giving the user a list of potential sites to visit.  Being in one of the  highest spots in organic ranking on this list is critical for any web business.  The top slots get the most clicks.  Since a single word is rarely used in SEO strategy anymore, the term “keyphrase” is starting to be used to more accurately describe the process.

Keywords help people find you and learn about you online

Millions of people go online everyday to solve a problem, find an answer to a question or get information.  These consumers try to limit their searching time by entering certain phrases into a search engine that they hope will speed up the process.  Many times they simply type in their problem or question.  When the search engine kicks back a list, most web surfers click on the entry that best describes the solution they are pursuing.  The blurb about your company is all the user will see unless they take that fateful step and click on to your site.  The keywords and phrases you select will make a big difference in traffic when they are easily understood by the search engines.

A keyword strategy will help bring the right people to your website.

A smart web business person does the research to find out what phrases have the most potential positive impact in driving customers to their site.  Finding out “how” people are looking for information, services, and product is vital to SEO success.  When selecting keyphrases to embed in a website, tools such as Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool and Google Trends can be very helpful in selecting the most effective words to work with the search engines. Starting with a main keyword, such as Hunting In Texas, you then develop the second level with at least three sub-keywords. Deer Hunting in Texas, Bird Hunting in Texas, and Hog Hunting in Texas would make great second layer keywords to expand your content structure.  The last layer will contain more keywords that are very specific.  Quail Hunting In Central Texas or Wild Hog Hunting West Texas are page titles that  can build on the content platform and use good keywords to attract the users this webpage wants contact.
